To achieve the colour responses of the Soda vapour glazing, I mix most of the clay from a mixture of raw ingredients, ball clays, kaolin, nephyline synite and sand.  I also use some Southern Ice Porcelain. To obtain the dry ‘lichen’ layered surfaces I use slips based on kaolin.  Each clay responds differently to the soda firing process producing surfaces that become an essential part of my work.
Most of my work is thrown, manipulated, altered and assembled, at freshly thrown or leather-hard stages.
